Luncheon, Robert Winder, "Bloody Foreigners: The Story of Immigration to Britain"
Imperial Hotel, Southampton Row, London WC1
nearest underground stations: Russell Square and Holborn

Mr. Robert Winder, author and former literary editor of the Independent, has titled his lively history of immigration into Britain "Bloody Foreigners." It is a survey of the main immigrant communities spanning 1,000 years of British history and chronicles the remarkable stories of immigration that founded and defined the nation. From the landscape to the language, the financial institutions to the food, much of British life has been sculpted by migrants from abroad. The book shows that although our attitude to "Bloody Foreigners" may not always be wholly sympathetic, Britain owes far more to them than we might think. "Bloody Foreigners" is published at an especially topical moment, since this summer sees the enlargement of the European Union, with an influx of new arrivals predicted. Although it is assumed that a certain amount of friction is inevitable, Mr. Winder concludes that these things can be overcome.

Cost: £16.00 per person includes luncheon.

To book, send your check payable to "Overseas Women's Club" to: Mrs. Ermina Bosch, 40 Sandalwood Mansions, Stone Hall Gardens, London W8 5UR. Include your name, address, phone number, and alumni club affiliation. Please specify if you require a vegetarian meal and/or fruit for dessert.

"A cross between ONLY FOOLS AND HORSES and THE ITALIAN JOB." Theatreworld

We all love to tell stories, but what happens when our stories lose touch with reality? With tales of Soho glamour set against the grim realities of the London underworld, this haunting play shows how lies can become myths that eventually come back to haunt us. The result is both funny and moving.

The cast includes Olivier Award-winning actress Suzan Sylvester, Peter Tate, reprising the role for which Time Out called him "excellent.", and Chris Harper, a new talent you're sure to hear more from.

Gala Performance of Bayanihan Dancers plus Diplomatic Reception Peacock Theatre, Portugal Street, London WC2; nearest underground stations: Holborn, Temple or Covent Garden

By kind invitation of His Excellency, Ambassador Edgardo B. Espiritu of the Republic of the Philippines, and the Overseas Women's Club, you are invited to a special performance of the Bayanihan Dancers, the National Dance Company of the Philippines. One of the most ancient and beautiful traditions in the Philippines is 'bayanihan' symbolized by the moving of a rural house on the shoulders of a working group of neighbours. 'Bayanihan' as a way of life is an indigenous tradition that has enabled individuals and groups with meagre means to pool their resources and achieve great results. This spirit of working together motivates the Bayanihan National Dance Company of the Philippines to tell the story of a proud and cultured people through folk songs, music and dance. The ancient custom of 'working together' is taken seriously by the members of Bayanihan.

There are no stars and no star billing in the Company. 'Bayanihan' itself is the star. Bayanihan was chosen to represent the Philippines at the Brussels World's Fair in 1958 where the young dancers received their first international success, and they also appeared twice with Ed Sullivan on his television show. Since 1958, Bayanihan's international performances took them to extensive tours of the United States, South America, Europe, Middle East, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The Company, acclaimed as one of the world's best folk dance companies, has received numerous international awards for Dance and reaped rave reviews.

Now on their 47th year of bringing the best of Philippine folk art to the major capitals of the world, the Bayanihan Dancers return to London having made a lasting impact on the cultural world, and added a new word to the dictionary of dance.

Cost: £40 per person (best seats in Stalls or Dress Circle), followed by a Diplomatic Reception to meet the Dancers and Musicians of the Bayanihan National Dance Company of the Philippines. Seats may also be booked without the Diplomatic Reception at £32.50 and £25.00.

To book, send your cheque payable to "Overseas Women's Club" to Loline Reed, 9 St. Hubert's Close, Gerrards Cross SL9 7EN (01753-880452 phone; 01753-892698 fax). Include your name, address, phone, email and alumni club affiliation. Also enclose a stamped self-addressed envelope for your tickets. Tickets are not refundable.

Another performance without the diplomatic reception is being given on Sunday June 6 at 4.30 p.m. These tickets (£15; £12.50 and £10) should be booked directly through the Peacock Theatre (0870-737-7737).
